Abstract

Abstract
Demographic questionnaires are the crux of many research methodologies and hold significant power as they are utilized to both answer research questions and visualize the research sample. However, many of the demographic questionnaires commonly used in social behavioral research today do not consider the complexity of respondent identity. This chapter outlines the limitations of current demographic data collection practices regarding measuring race and ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation. Recommendations to promote inclusivity in future demographic data collection for race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and additional demographic variables are provided. Ultimately, this chapter asserts that accuracy in data collection cannot be achieved without inclusivity and encourages researchers to be as inclusive as possible to fight against the systemic exclusion of individuals holding marginalized identities.
