Abstract

Abstract
Abstract This chapter discusses misguided approaches that may seem on the surface to reflect positive psychology but fall under the concept of “toxic positivity.” Toxic positivity can be defined as using positive thinking in a well-intended but inauthentic manner to suppress, deny, or reject the stress or negative features of a situation. The aim of this chapter is to outline the differences between positive psychology and toxic positivity as well as recognize common problems with toxic positivity in the context of disability. Unique problems or pitfalls are outlined in the use of language, recognizing microaggressions, understanding inspiration porn and misguided kindness or charity, ethical problems with the use of positivity in healthcare, and the risk of discrimination and misguided advocacy efforts.
