Back in Milan, he met Besso again and they discussed physics intently. Einstein began work leading to his first paper on intermolecular attraction. Mileva assisted but the key ideas were Einstein’s. Having alienated his professors, Einstein was unable to find an assistantship at the Polytechnikum and sent his first paper around Europe trying to get a job. He failed and returned to his family in Milan. Einstein was given a temporary teaching position in Winterthur. Mileva fell pregnant with Einstein’s child. In Winterthur, Einstein played both in orchestras and in chamber music with locals. Mileva failed her examination again and departed to Novi Sad to have her baby. Einstein obtained another temporary teaching appointment in Schaffhausen. Once again, he played a full part in local musical life. Subsequently, Einstein obtained the position in the Bern patent office for which his friend Grossmann had recommended him. However, his thesis was not approved by his advisor Prof Kleiner.
