Abstract

Abstract
As this book went to press, Wyoming’s Republican civil war continued to rage. The 2024 primary elections pushed the new-MAGA aligned insurgents into the majority, albeit by the narrowest of margins. Their success makes Wyoming the first state to come under their grip—and a test for a movement more interested in the expression of identity than in governing. Meanwhile, the Republican civil war is being fought no less fiercely in other red states. The Epilogue considers what such battles portend for the future of the Republican Party. On the positive side, the MAGA insurgency does make room for more working-class citizens to participate in politics. But unfortunately, it rejects the important role conservatives should play as custodians of American political institutions and republican traditions.
