Abstract

Abstract
This chapter assesses the current state of play in the Wyoming Republican civil war by evaluating the 2022 Republican primaries and the 2023 state party elections. Although Liz Cheney was easily defeated, many other old guard Republicans in the state survived. They even managed to claw back some ground they had lost by reclaiming control of some county parties. These outcomes suggest that the old guard is effectively counter-mobilizing against the new insurgents. Similar civil wars are playing out in parties and legislatures in red states all across the nation, most of which are just below the national media’s radar. The fate of the GOP will be decided by a thousand such skirmishes, not a handful of high-profile races like Cheney’s.
