Abstract

Abstract
This book explores the rise, decline, and potential resurgence of the radical environmental movement, once considered the top domestic terror threat by the U.S. government after 9/11. Thomas Zeitzoff investigates the origins and evolution of factions like Earth First! and the Earth Liberation Front, and their reliance on sabotage, arson, and other disruptive tactics. Drawing on interviews with activists and experts, he examines links between punk subcultures, animal liberation, and antitechnology extremism, including the actions of Ted Kaczynski. The book also confronts urgent questions about climate change, government repression, and why today’s activists have largely rejected more militant approaches. Finally, it challenges readers to consider how far environmental activists are willing to go in an era of escalating ecological and political crises.
