<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>In July 1832, cholera traveled along with US troops sent to the West to prosecute the Black Hawk War. Great Lakes towns and villages fell into the pandemic’s grip. Eventually, Vibrio infiltrated Cincinnati, where the leading physician, Dr. Daniel Drake, bucked the medical consensus and published his findings that cholera did not discriminate and showed no predilections for intemperate victims. The disease visited several places along the Ohio and Mississippi rivers and devastated New Orleans. The appalling mortality among all ranks in the Crescent City was no secret to residents there but would make little impact on the powerful public voices in the rest of nation who had already made up their mind about the pandemic.</jats:p>
