“An Irish Emigrant Died at Montpelier”

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Deteriorating economic conditions led increasing numbers of Irish to immigrate to North America by the 1830s. This chapter details their ordeal as they crossed the Atlantic during the spring of 1832. Cholera plagued them in transit, upon arrival in Quebec City and Montreal, and as they journeyed into the United States searching for employment. Irish immigrants were met with hostility as Vermont and New York municipal officials tried to restrict their travels while allowing others to travel freely. Americans both privately and publicly dehumanized immigrants and explained away their suffering as their own fault, even when the victims were a mother and her young daughter.</jats:p>
