Abstract

Abstract
This chapter concludes by arguing that science has not been a trustworthy contributor to good moral relations. To the extent that it has insisted on separating “real science” from questions of what we value most and the work of upholding moral norms, the scientific enterprise has abdicated its place in the moral community. Through the pursuit of reparative research, the chapter argues, science can become a reliable participant in the work of restoring moral relations and an active contributor to justice. The chapter calls on researchers to enact good moral relations in their projects, treating people without scientific credentials as knowers, holding powerful actors accountable for their actions and their knowledge claims, and grounding decisions about error and uncertainly in more adequate moral norms. It further urges research institutions to normalize reparative science and create the conditions for improved moral relations by embracing principles of anti-ignorance, scrutability, and pluralism.
