Abstract
Abstract
This chapter confronts the challenge of remaking moral relations when moral norms change. When a practice previously considered acceptable comes to be seen as abhorrent, individuals who played a role in upholding previously shared norms may find themselves ostracized from the moral community. But for better moral norms to result in better moral relations, the moral community needs to be reconstituted to include everyone, including those who participated in the discredited moral order, as upholders of new norms. Examining three moments of rapid norm change in communities living with pollution, this chapter shows how reparative research can help coalesce moral community around new norms. By being inquisitive together, asking generous questions, and leveraging imagination, people differently affected by old, inadequate norms can start to build a shared understanding of the past and vision for the future.
