Abstract
Abstract
This chapter shows how reparative science can contribute to hope, a hallmark of good moral relations. Hope, the chapter explains, is expressed through the active pursuit of a desired future, despite uncertainty about whether it can be achieved. Affirmative hope focuses on seeing moral norms upheld, while transformative hope pursues pathways toward improved moral norms. Offering examples of community-led research that aimed to demonstrate the health consequences of exposure to pollution, the chapter shows how processes of investigation can be an ongoing source of possible pathways toward justice, thus bolstering hope, especially when continued over long periods of time. In contrast, arriving at proof without seeding new possibilities can be detrimental to hope.
