Abstract

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>This chapter covers William Safire’s confrontation with Kissinger about his wiretapping and crusade against the administration’s wiretaps, Kissinger’s claim that he had no knowledge of Safire’s wiretapping and concern over Safire’s crusade, and a Nixon speech and paper on Watergate. It also discusses the Defense Department’s release to a Senate committee of documents on the secret bombing of Cambodia, a cover story, and the falsification of the records; Defense’s release of a department paper on the bombing and falsification amid Kissinger’s confirmation hearings to become secretary of state; and Kissinger’s anger over these releases. Plus it discusses Nixon’s press conference where he announced his appointment of Kissinger to become secretary of state. And it discusses a response by the Justice Department to Morton Halperin’s wiretapping lawsuit, Kissinger’s preparations for handling the wiretaps at his confirmation hearings, his belief that he too was wiretapped, Joseph Kraft’s wiretapping, and the Chilean coup.</jats:p>
