Abstract

Abstract
This chapter discusses Kissinger’s secret Middle East peace talks with an Egyptian official and a U.S. diplomat’s troublesome cables on them, U.S. bombing in Cambodia and Laos, and Kissinger’s exasperation with a Pentagon statement on bombing in Laos and colleagues who were unenthusiastic about bombing. The chapter also discusses the Watergate scandal, Kissinger’s advice on how to save Nixon, his claims he knew little about the scandal and was barely involved in internal deliberations about it, and his regular consultations with colleagues and advocacy of morning meetings on it. Plus the chapter discusses the administration’s wiretaps of officials and journalists and Kissinger’s claims that he was not involved in the decision to conduct wiretapping, didn’t request any wiretaps, and had “nothing to do with” those on journalists. And it takes up Kissinger’s denials of any knowledge of the operations of the Plumbers and his discussions with Random House about publishing an admiring book on him.
