Abstract
Abstract
This chapter discusses George McGovern, Irving Lazar, Jimmy Hoffa’s POW scheme, and Senator Jackson’s SALT amendment, including Kissinger’s outrage that a Nixon aide had Nixon phone Jackson in support of it. It also discusses a Kissinger resignation threat and a book on Kissinger that upset his brother because it alleged that he had benefited from nepotism by Kissinger. Plus the chapter takes up the October peace agreement with North Vietnam, South Vietnamese President Thieu’s refusal to sign it, Hanoi’s demand that it be upheld, Kissinger’s remark at a press conference that “peace is at hand,” and Nixon aide Charles Colson’s elation over Kissinger’s press conference. And it discusses steps Kissinger asked the Soviets to take toward North Vietnam that might help convince Thieu to accept the agreement and to delay U.S. signing with Hanoi while he mollified Thieu, and concern that Hanoi might reveal that peace was not actually at hand.
