Abstract
<p>This textbook examines the institutions, processes, ideas, and conflicts that shape government and politics in the United States. It explores the constitutional foundations of American democracy, including the development of federalism, the separation of powers, civil rights, and representative government. The book analyses the roles of Congress, the presidency, the Supreme Court, political parties, interest groups, elections, public opinion, and the media in shaping political outcomes. It considers major debates surrounding race, social policy, economic policy, foreign policy, and environmental policy, highlighting the competing values and interests that influence public decision-making. The book also examines how political institutions interact with contemporary challenges, including inequality, polarization, globalization, climate change, and changing patterns of political participation. It concludes that American politics is best understood as a dynamic system in which enduring constitutional principles, political conflict, and social change continually shape the exercise of power and democratic governance.</p>
