Abstract
Abstract
Demographic determinism is not a new concept within American political discourse. It has been prodded for some time by political elites. As described in this chapter, this prodding has gone on for so long that the threat generated from it is chronically salient in the public. Using a series of experiments, including exit poll experiments implemented in the 2022 midterms, this chapter shows that very minimal mentions of racial demographic change and even intentionally nonthreatening messages about demographic change lead to potent senses of racial threat and erosion of support for American democracy. It even increases support for the use of political violence. This chapter addresses the most major implications of elite messaging and the big flip. The views that extend from the misperceptions of racial demographic change threaten the future cohesion of American democracy.
