Abstract
Abstract
This chapter recounts the role of a prominent sports economist (Andrew Zimbalist) as a private consultant, who authored several favorable commissioned analyses for clients seeking stadium projects. Forecasts of net positive financial returns generally have not proved to be accurate. Errors in the private report on Truist Park and The Battery produced on behalf of the Atlanta Braves are documented. A review of the projection models used in Worcester, Massachusetts, and Cobb County indicates that the approach is not credible. Thus, this private projection model should not be relied upon until its predictive accuracy has been established through peer review. The documented experiences provide examples of how stadium advocates may employ hired experts to promote the approval of public stadium projects.
