Abstract

Abstract
This chapter examines President Michelle Bachelet of Chile and her leadership when a devastating earthquake (referred to as 27/F) and tsunami hit the Maule region of the country in 2010. This natural disaster is considered a gender-neutral crisis type. The chapter assesses media reports and public statements from February 27, 2010 (when the earthquake struck), through March 11, 2010 (when Bachelet’s term ended). The analysis confirms the book’s theory. A gender-neutral crisis type, together with Bachelet’s gender-neutral framing of the crisis and mixed leadership did not provide many opportunities to establish gender role congruency and, with it, elevated approval ratings. Despite her feminized crisis communication, Bachelet’s approval ratings did not change as a result of the crisis.
