Abstract
Abstract
This introductory chapter presents the term “chronic crisis.” What does the term entail, and why might it be useful to work with—yet another—crisis category? The chapter outlines and discusses three distinct categories of chronic crises: (i) seething chronic crises (e.g., famine, waves of starvation deaths), (ii) perpetual chronic crises (e.g., AMR, climate change), and (iii) transitional chronic crises (e.g., the HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 pandemics). The chapter also highlights some chronic crises that have not been included in the book and provides reasons for their exclusion. The use of key terminology mainly pertaining to genders and global inequality is also laid out.
