Abstract

Abstract
This chapter describes the purpose of the edited volume Leadership for Flourishing and provides an overview of the chapters. Conventional understandings of leadership are often framed in terms of characteristics and practices of individual leaders guiding groups and organizations toward the attainment of goals defined by such groups. Leadership for Flourishing (LfF) is unconventional. Leadership is seen as the capacity of a system, everyone is a leader, and the goal is Ecosystem-wide Flourishing: complete well-being for all, across all levels, domains, and ecosystems. This is an invitation to Servanthood (deep service to virtuous purpose) as opposed to servitude (coerced labor at odds with holistic flourishing). This is an aspirational ideal, but the chapters in the volume show that groups are moving toward this ideal and explain why and how. Key themes are illustrated by the example of leadership in service of the noble purpose of protecting the lives of children in the death camp at Bergen-Belsen during the darkest days of World War II. No single definition of leadership, or flourishing, prevails across chapters. This diversity of perspectives is a strength, and there are points of convergence. The volume encourages critical and generative dialogue on LfF for the benefit of all without exception.
