Abstract

Abstract
This chapter presents in detail the case studies featured in this book and the case methods applied in the analysis, including additional details on the case selection techniques, the reflexive casing method, and the process tracing approach. Delving into the case details, this chapter describes who is collaborating in the US and UK public-private partnerships (PPPs) (the types of organizations and core relationships among the PPP actors) and the short-term and longer-term goals defined by the respective partners. The descriptions include how the primary work of each PPP is delegated, subcontracted, and shaped through the partnership structures, both formal and informal, considering the delegation of authority, risk-sharing, and residual rights of control, and trust, autonomy, and reciprocity in the partners’ engagement in the PPP. Another key aspect depicted is how the PPPs have defined the outcomes that reflect the goals of the PPP and the contractual infrastructure for performance evaluation (e.g., metrics, incentives, sanctions, and payout terms). Other important features of the case study settings—political, economic, social, and others—that motivate, facilitate, or constrain the evolution of the formal and informal relationships and outcomes of the PPPs over time are also elucidated in this chapter.
