Abstract

Abstract
This conversation includes Black filmmakers, producers, actors, and researchers. The participants reflect on the transformations of the audiovisual sector and the advances made by a new generation of filmmakers and researchers, and on the risks of this period—such as the emergence of narrow market expectations for what constitutes Black cinema and the conditions that are sometimes imposed for inclusion in the field. The discussion thus foregrounds the contradictions of progress, and in doing so considers the role of uncertainty not only as a historic condition resulting from marginalization but also as a productive space from which to reflect on the past, present, and possibilities for the future of Black filmmaking and scholarship.
