Abstract
Abstract
Although Josephus offers little of his own thoughts on the Parthians, he references them many times in his works. This chapter will approach Josephus’ image of the Parthians differently, considering how he uses it in his works across six main categories: warfare, diplomacy, courtly intrigue, government and traditions, character, and the Jewish subjects of Parthia. Thus, it provides a catalog of the Parthians in Josephus’ works. It does not deny that the Parthians were minor characters in Josephus’ histories; however, by collecting all his references to the Parthians into one place and organizing them into discernable categories, possible plot devices and themes emerge.
