Abstract

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>This chapter explains the key concepts and terms used in the book. It defines public and private law, public and private interests, and public and private enforcement. It also identifies four different types of ‘enforcement right’ that feature in law enforcement systems and which are referred to in the book: rights of complaint (information), rights of action, rights of joinder and intervention, and rights to terminate or discontinue proceedings. These enforcement rights’ vary in strength.</jats:p>
