Abstract

Abstract
This chapter explores the reception that the Portuguese press gave to African American jazz trumpeter, composer and bandleader Miles Davis during his visits to Portugal. Davis visited the country three times in twenty years (1971–1991). The first, in November 1971, was to participate in the first International Cascais Jazz Festival (Newport Jazz Festival in Europe) in a period when the country was ruled by the right-wing colonialist Estado Novo (New State) under Marcello Caetano’s leadership. His last appearance occurred in March 1991 in a completely different social-political context. Portugal had already embraced democracy and was a member of the European Union. Miles was received like a pop star, and his concerts were tremendously successful. Still, his presence in Portugal was always shrouded in controversy.
