Abstract

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Since the introduction of the Project Essay Grade (PEG) engine by Ellis Page in the 1960s, technologies related to automated writing evaluation (AWE) have made noticeable progress and witnessed numerous applications in language education contexts with varied approaches. This entry starts with a brief review of common features of current AWE systems as well as the major techniques under the hood. A summary of the findings about the effectiveness of AWE systems in language classrooms is provided. The entry ends with a call for research on several under‐investigated areas.</jats:p>
