Abstract
Abstract
Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude have become increasingly prevalent since late 2022 and created both opportunities and challenges for educators. Language teachers have leveraged GenAI for content creation, lesson planning, personalized learning, and professional development. Nonetheless, significant challenges exist, including barriers related to cost and infrastructure, institutional resistance, ethical concerns about accuracy and privacy, and the risk of widening digital divides. Given the fast pace of GenAI development and the urgent need to prepare language teachers to keep up, identifying good principles for language teacher development is critical. This entry briefly reviews existing literature on teacher development in GenAI and then suggests key elements of effective language teacher development: collaboration, hands‐on experimentation with AI tools, advocacy for resources, and ongoing professional development. The entry concludes by emphasizing the importance of a humanistic approach that preserves essential teacher–student relationships while leveraging AI to enhance rather than replace effective teaching practices.
