Abstract
Abstract
This entry presents a succinct account of quantitative research infrastructure in applied linguistics research, focusing specifically on two primary data collection tools—questionnaires and corpora—and two popular statistical software programs—SPSS and R—for analyzing and reporting quantitative data. Questionnaires are among the most commonly employed data collection instruments in applied linguistics research due to their versatility, ease of construction, and efficiency in collating large datasets. Technological advancements have introduced diverse technological platforms, such as Qualtrics, SoSci, and Amazon Mechanical Turk, each with its unique benefits and limitations, that have enabled researchers to reach global audiences. Corpora, a representative large collection of written or transcribed speech, allow researchers to explore language use across different contexts. While online corpora can be analyzed using the tools available on different online platforms such as Sketch Engine, the corpora that researchers create on their own need to be analyzed using offline tools such as AntConc and Wordsmith tools. Statistical analysis is essential for interpreting quantitative data, with SPSS being widely used for its accessibility and range of statistical tests that it offers, and R, though being less commonly adopted, offering advanced statistical modelling and highly customizable data visualization options.
