Abstract
Abstract
Nonprofessional interpreting and translation (NPIT) refers to the linguistic and cultural mediation activities carried out by individuals that do not necessarily possess the qualifications of professional interpreters and translators. Recent scholarship on NPIT investigates the contexts where nonprofessionals are most likely to perform interpreting and translation activities, including crisis and conflict situations, healthcare and community settings, online collaborative translation environments, and child language brokering. This entry presents an overview of the individuals who take on translation and interpreting activities, the networks in which they collaborate, and the impact they have in political, social, and economic spheres.
