Abstract

Abstract
Mastering the pronunciation of additional languages is a great challenge for learners due to the difficulty this skill entails. For years, researchers have been investigating ways to facilitate or improve the teaching‐learning process, and one of the fields that has received most attention is computer‐assisted pronunciation training (CAPT). CAPT explores the possibilities technology offers to facilitate the teaching and learning of the pronunciation of additional languages, and one type of technology that has gained special relevance in recent years due to its popularity among users is social media. Hence, this entry will focus on the use of social media for L2 pronunciation teaching and learning. Social media is an umbrella term covering a wide range of online platforms that allow users to create and share different types of content (e.g., text, images, audios, and videos) as well as interact with other users in various ways (e.g., written messages and reacting to posts or contents). This entry first offers an introduction to social media and its potential for language learning. Next, it presents an overview of empirical research investigating the potential of these tools for pronunciation instruction, followed by some recommendations for an effective implementation of social media for pronunciation teaching and learning. Finally, some directions for future research are provided. The studies reviewed explore different types of platforms, including social networking sites such as X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook, podcasting communities, voice blogs, or instant messaging applications like Tencent QQ, WeChat, or WhatsApp.
