Abstract

Abstract
Critical cultural awareness is the process of developing an understanding of diversity within societies, which is often achieved through specific training designed to promote positive attitudes toward diversity and a more profound understanding of others. This entry explores the development of the concept of critical cultural awareness in multilingual education. For effective intercultural communication and to increase learners' awareness of small or large cultures, intercultural competence is essential. It is associated with this training through the “small and/or large cultures” perspective. Consequently, this entry conceptualizes “critical cultural awareness” within the framework of intercultural communicative competence (ICC), considering ongoing research themes such as intercultural citizenship education, interculturality, and small and large cultures.
