Abstract
Abstract
Cultural Linguistics is a branch of linguistics that explores the relationship between language and culture. World Englishes, as a field of study, explores historical, cultural, functional, and formal variation of English across different societies around the world. Cultural Linguistics and World Englishes are closely related in the sense that different varieties of English result from the nativisation and acculturation of English in varying sociocultural contexts, and they can be examined from the perspective of Cultural Linguistics. This entry provides an overview of the historical development of Cultural Linguistics, and it introduces Cultural Linguistics as a multidisciplinary inquiry of language and culture. It also introduces the theoretical and analytical frameworks for the study of World Englishes and provides examples of the cultural conceptualizations of a number of varieties of World Englishes.
