Abstract

Abstract
Like other forms of writing, writing in a language for specific purposes requires writers to ensure that their texts achieve their intended communicative goals and are effectively understood and interpreted by their target readers. With rapid technological advances, writing for the Internet has become an increasingly complex activity given that multiple audiences now converge online. Digital text composing involves writing across different text types, modes (visual, aural), and media (print, digital) and requires the ability to combine verbal texts with multimodal and multimedia elements (photographs, images, embedded videos) to adapt specialized content for a general audience. Additionally, writers need to be aware of awareness of how the verbal mode (i.e., the texts) can interrelate in different ways with other semiotic modes of meaning making. This entry provides an overview of the social, technological, and individual dimensions of writing in languages for specific purposes, offering examples of genres to illustrate language‐related aspects of writing.
