Abstract

Abstract
This entry provides an overview of the applied phonetics and phonology section of the Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics . Applied Phonetics, Phonology, and Pronunciation (APPP) is a vibrant field of research and practice devoted to the learning and teaching of second language pronunciation. Since the publication of the first edition of the Encyclopedia in 2013, APP has emerged as a prominent stream within applied linguistics thanks to its own highly ranked journal ( Journal of Second Language Pronunciation ) and to a burgeoning international array of conferences and workshops. Some of the recent developments in the field mirror changes taking place in other research areas in the social sciences, such as the omnipresent influence of artificial intelligence, increasingly sophisticated approaches to research methodology, and changes related to the Open Science framework. Others are more field‐specific, such as the expansion of research on languages other than English and the development of more advanced tools for speech analysis and language pedagogy. This overview previews the forward‐looking contents of the second edition, which are evidence of the evolution of APP into the vibrant field of research and practice it is today, devoted to better understanding the teaching and learning of L2 pronunciation in our global, connected world.
