Abstract
This entry explores historiography as a metadisciplinary approach to understanding the historical development of language teaching and learning. It outlines key distinctions between received history and historiographic inquiry, highlights the interpretive and contingent nature of historical knowledge, and identifies methods for collecting and evaluating historical data. Emphasis is placed on how historiography contributes to disciplinary self‐awareness, supports revisionary perspectives, and prevents intellectual stagnation. The entry also considers new tools and technologies—including corpus analysis, bibliometric analysis, and Generative AI—that are reshaping the practice of historical research in the field.
