Abstract

Abstract
English for Nursing describes the ways in which English is used in nursing in the clinical setting as well as in nursing education. Recent research has analyzed data recorded in the clinical setting to determine the linguistic content of English at all levels of speech production to complete nursing tasks successfully. In addition, studies have consistently shown that EAL students encounter greater difficulties succeeding in nursing programs than native English speakers and domestic EAL students of immigrant/refugee background have higher attrition rates and lower GPAs than international EAL students. Considerable progress has been made in assessing the clinical communication and written academic skills of EAL nursing students and effective interventions have been developed to improve skills, often the result of collaboration between language and nursing experts. However, more work is needed to understand the challenges that EAL nursing students encounter in academic and discipline‐specific assessments beyond first‐year courses and the long‐term effects of these interventions on students' successful completion of nursing programs.
