Abstract

The study of urban poverty focuses on the origins and impacts of inequality in cities. From early works such as W.E.B. Du Bois's investigation of the spatial patterns of racism and segregation in the USA, researchers have used a range of methods to understand how economic, political, and social changes have led to changing patterns of poverty at the neighborhood level. In recent years, studies of urban poverty have focused on investigating issues of housing, eviction, and gentrification that are currently impacting cities, as well as incorporating an international comparative perspective.
