Abstract

This chapter offers a diachronic typological survey of typical changes in argument structure, as well as an overview of the mechanisms and processes responsible for changes in argument structure. It focuses, first, on the core argument structure, that is, on the most important changes in the domain of subject and object, further concentrating on some changes in other aspects of the argument structure such as predicative noun. In addition, a concise discussion will be provided on the role of case variation in the emergence of changes. Finally, attention is paid to the parameters that play a major role in changes of argument structure and can be considered as triggers of such developments, elucidating the mechanisms that can be responsible for the diachronic changes in argument structure.
