Abstract

<jats:p>This entry examines the impact of neoliberalism on TESOL teacher education and professional development. It provides a definition of neoliberalism and relates it to language education. It critiques the marked focus on identity issues in critical applied linguistics and language teacher training and professional development research and provides a more sociologically grounded conceptualization of criticality. The entry ends by identifying salient empirical evidence revealing the depth and scope of neoliberalism's influence on language education worldwide, and by clarifying the role of criticality in the broader task of countering neoliberalism's influence on teacher training programs and other domains of language education.</jats:p>
